Malawi Culture and People

People

The Malawi people are of Bantu origin with the ethnic groups including Chewa, Nyanja, Yao, Tumbuka, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, Ngonde, Asian and European.

The Chichewa (Chewa) people forming the largest part of population group and are largely in the central and southern parts of the country.

The Yao people are predominately found around the southern area of Lake Malawi.

Tumbuka are found mainly in the north of the country.

There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities.

Ethnic Relations: The many tribes generally have gotten along well. However, there is a feeling that people from the north are more intelligent than their southern counterparts, and Banda mistrusted northerners, attempting to keep them out of public office and curtail their enrollment in Kamuzu Academy. Citizens feel a kinship with the neighboring countries and during the civil war in Mozambique created many refugee camps along the borders and fed the refugees with the country's reserves of corn. At that time, Malawi was one of the few African countries that could feed itself.

Religion
The Chewa people, who form the largest part of the population predominantly Christian/Protestant and the Yao people are mainly Muslim

T the religious groups in Malawi can be broken down aproximately as follow:
Protestant 55%
Muslim 20%
Roman Catholic 20%
for traditional indigenous beliefs and other minor religions 5%

Culture
The Malawian society and culture is a blend of various cultures due to the presence of different ethnic groups. The Malawians are mostly black Africans and the racial communities include Chewa, Nyanja, Yao, Lomwe, Tumbuka, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, Ngonde, Asian, and European. A number of Malawians are Christians and the other religious groups include Muslims and many more. There are different languages spoken in the various regions of Malawi. English is the official and Chichewa is the national language of the country. The other languages that are extensively used by the Malwis are Chichewa Chinyanja, Chiyao Chitumbuka.

Initially, due to lot of migration and conflicts, there existed no Malawian society. Late in the 20th century, the distinctions between different tribal groups decreased to a great extent. Despite some frictions, the Malawian society and culture have emerged strongly. The people of Malawi are basically conservative and traditional.

Art : Batik is a very popular art form in Malawi. The batik clothes are created by the help of wax. Among the other art forms there are hardwood carvings, soapstone carvings, basketwork, pottery, chief chairs, handicrafts and some other cottage industries.

Culture: Malawi has developed a very rich culture due to the presence of various ethnicities in the country. The Music Festival of Malawi, called “Lake of Stars Festival” is a very popular one in Malawi. It is held in the month of September.

Music : The Second World War influenced the music of Malawi very deeply. The soldiers from different countries carried their culture and tradition to the lands of Malawi. The musical instruments hat came during that period are guitar, banjo etc.

Geography

Malawi is a landlocked country that lies east of Zambia, north and west of Mozambique, and south of Tanzania. Its area is 45,747 square miles (118,500 square kilometers). The major topographic feature is Lake Malawi, a freshwater lake that is home to hundreds of fish species found nowhere else in the world. Twenty percent of the landmass consists of water. The topography varies from the high Nyika plateau in the north to the Shire River valley in the south that is an extension of the Great Rift Valley. In the far southeast corner is Mount Mulanje, which is among the highest mountains in Africa.

The capital, Lilongwe, is roughly in the center of the country. However, the major commercial center is Blantyre, named after the birthplace in Scotland of the first European to discover Lake Malawi, the English explorer Livingston. Access to the Indian Ocean is normally by rail to the port of Beira in Mozambique.
