Type of safari- Adventure Safaris , Destination - South Africa

Tour Summary

If it's variety you're after, you've come to the right place. South Africa has an enormously long coastline ranging from about 35S to 27S, which isn't quite within the usual range of tropical diving.

Day 1
Arrive at Durban International Airport or be collected from Durban, meet your host & transfer to Umkomaas on the Natal South Coast. Check in to your B&B & relax for the rest of day. All rooms are en-suite and have t.vs. Dinner is for your own account.

Day 2 & Day 3
The next few days will be spent doing two dives a day on the Aliwal Shoal , Produce (wreck) & surrounding reefs. Breakfast will be served after your first dive at the Lodge. All launching in South Africa is from semi-rigid boats and is a SURF launch – sometimes more exciting than the dive!! The afternoons are yours to relax & explore the area. Depths on the Shoal range from 6m – 30m. Summer water temperatures from 24-27 degrees, and winter 19-21 degrees. There are two wrecks in the area one at 15-30m, the other 21-26m.

The Raggedtooth Shark is found in numbers on the Shoal during our winter months which makes for fantastic diving with these placid creatures. – June to Nov.

One afternoon you will be taken to a crocodile farm in the area or into Durban where you will visit uShaka Marine World -home to the 5th largest aquarium in the world. Dinner for your own account.

Day 4
After breakfast depart for Zululand & Lake St.Lucia, situated in one of our 4 World Heritage Sites. Enjoy a boat cruise on the estuary to view the hippo, crocodiles and amazing bird life. A light finger lunch is served on the boat and a cash bar is available. After the cruise, depart for Sodwana Bay, on the Maputoland coast. Here you will be diving in a marine reserve and have opportunity to dive some of the best site in the area.
Check-in & relax before dinner is served in the restaurant.
There is a pool, restaurant & bar at the main lodge & fully equipped dive centers in the area.

Day 5 & 6
Your first 2 dives will be on 2-Mile reef. This is the closest reef to the beach and could be called a “house reef”. Depths at Sodwana range from 9m – 30m, but most diving is done at depths of 15-18m. Other reefs – 5 Mile, 7 Mile and 9 Mile. All a must!! Enjoy a packed breakfast on the beach in between dives, while soaking up the sun. Afternoons are yours to explore the area . You can go horse riding, quad biking or take a walk on one of the many trails in the area or relax by the pool.
Sodwana Bay is home to the prehistoric fish, the Coelacanth with 18 fish having been identified to date.

Extra activities: Horse riding, mirolight flips along the coast, quad bike trails, game fishing & turtle tours from November to February (watch Leathback & Loggerhead turles nesting & laying their eggs)

Day 7
After breakfast we depart for the border & Southern Mozambique – this is a fairly short journey. Once across the border at Kosi Bay you will be transferred in 4x4s to the resort. This establishment is paradise in the bush. Diving opened in this area in 1993 after 25 years of war. Today, it is an extension of South Africa in terms of diving, offering brilliant reef dives. The Pinnacle, which is a deep dive, is renowned for its sharks, and “Bass City” is home to “Bert”, a huge Potato Bass.

Coral Gardens just up the beach, offers spectacular coral reefs. Untouched for years this really is worth the trip. Accommodation is in comfortable sea-facing log chalets. There is a pool, pub & restaurant on the premises & a lake inland which is home to hippo and crocs – a nice place to watch the sun go down.

Days 8, 9 & 10
You will dive twice a day on the surrounding reefs. Explore this amazing world under the sea, in an area, which has only been developed in the past 10 years. Depths vary from 10m – 40m.
Breakfast will be served at the lodge in between dives.
Lunch - Afternoons are yours to relax, visit the nearby lake or simply relax.

Day 11
After breakfast we head for the African bush. Our destination is an up-market, private game lodge situated in northern Zululand & home to the “BIG 5” and other creatures great and small. Check-in & relax. Accommodation is luxurious, en-suite with bar fridge & private deck. Possible sightings of animals from your private deck make this a special place. Lunch & then afternoon tea before you embark on your first afternoon game drive in open game viewing vehicles.
Dinner is served at the lodge after your drive.

Day 12
An early start to your day with a morning game drive, tea/coffee served on the drive. Breakfast at the lodge & then enjoy the African bush on foot – your professional ranger will take you on a walk & introduce you to the smaller creatures, fauna & flora.
Lunch. Time to enjoy the view from your room or the pool before afternoon tea & your 2nd afternoon game drive.

Day 13
Your last game drive to find those animals that may have eluded you till now & then enjoy your last breakfast in this special part of Africa before departing for Durban
